Struggles Of Being a College Student Athlete (Entry #6)

This has circled around me for a couple of months now. The struggles of being a college student athlete are real and challenging. From anyone else's point of view, it doesn't sound too bad. Sometimes it isn't but when it does catch up, it tends to impact a lot. There are many pros and cons of being a student athlete, and each side has a great effect on us.

Many athletes wake up and go to practice, the important part of this is, are they eating a proper breakfast beforehand? Are they hydrating and getting the right amount of sleep to function well the next day? Are they putting themselves first and taking care of their body after practice? This is an important aspect to being an athlete that needs to be considered. Aside from that, there is the academic part of it. Being a student requires you to have good time management skills and taking responsibility for your work. Inevitably, there will be days where you feel a burnout. Sports makes you so incredibly tired but school also has you up doing heavy work. Some student athletes have jobs as well. This creates an intense amount of stress trying to maintain everything while still doing your best to have a life outside of it. There is only so much a person can handle.

The good part of this is that at the end of the day, you have a team to 'go home' to. You have friends and family to help you through this tough part of being a college student athlete. It feels extremely challenging now but the idea of being capable enough to do this is so rewarding. We are strong individuals with so much ahead of us. Mental health is important when it comes to this and it is important that we don't dismiss this behind all the skill and talent that is only shown.

Stay tuned,

  1. Hey, Yaqueline-- I really enjoyed your post about being a college athlete. It's difficult to achieve great grades without the added stress of playing a sport. Taking care of your body by eating breakfast, sleeping well the night before, and leaning on your support group will lessen those moments of burnout.

  2. I totally see where you're coming from about eating healthy, staying hydrated and taking care of yourself. It's very difficult to fit those things in, and when we have other responsibilities, our diet and exercise tend to be the first priority to fall off the to do list. But as an athlete it becomes a non-negotiable in order to succeed at your sport.

  3. I agree, I am also a student athlete and time management is so important to make sure I am completing all my work while still taking care of myself. Getting good grades is already hard enough and with the added stress of playing a sport makes it even harder.

  4. Being a student, employee, and athlete is a lot of work, physically and mentally. Having a support system from your teammates, family, and friends is helpful when you feel like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders. Kudos to you!

  5. Your four new entries look pretty good, Yaqueline. Your writing flows pretty well, and you have personality in your writing. Good visual appeal with images and layout. You are somewhat developing your content well, but there are areas where you can analyze further and create more significance for your audience. Keep working the concepts of rhetoric to connect to your audience and keep them engaged. Keep it up!
