Mayhem! (Entry #5)


This Allstate Mayhem commercial aims to connect with todays generation in order to make the ad more "relatable" to grab their attention. They try to promote a safer lifestyle in order to protect the roof over your head. Their goal is to not only "sell" their product, but to also make it so that the audience has a reason to watch it all the way through. They strive to create content that'll keep the people engaged every time they release a new commercial.

The advertisement begins with the guy named Mayhem straightening his hair. The room is decorated to be the typical environment of a teenage girl. All the lights are on, there are makeup brushes in front of him, and the colors of the room are soft and bright. Mayhem begins by saying he is a "beauty blogger". In a humorous way, he mocks the teenage girls who at some point have tried being or acted like they were beauty VLOGgers. Although he uses the word blog instead of vlog, that shows he is attempting to be like them but is failing to do so! He also accidentally starts a fire with the straightener. This is another way to make fun of the younger generation as sometimes they can be clumsy and become the reason the house needs home insurance in the first place. Allstate does this so that the ad is more entertaining and draws the views in. Their target audience includes families that have teenage kids or simply kids in general. To really make this relatable, his language also tries to mimic a typical teenage girl. He says things like "This mermaid hair how-to, well, it's going to get me a ton of likes" and "that's a thumbs down emoji", all while wearing an eye mask. No one expresses themselves in real life through emojis. So, we can only assume he's over exaggerating it a bit to bring in that humor. 

The commercial was set up this way to show that in todays world of foolish mistakes, anything can happen. However, it CAN be recovered- which is what Allstate is promoting. The ad successfully markets their company and it fits the people in todays audience. I find it quite impressive they managed to do that in the span of 23 seconds all in one setting without camera movement. These short commercials by Allstate Mayhem will continue to draw in an audience in order to promote home insurance (something not everyone is actually interested in or in need of, but they enjoy the ad anyway).
