Atypical (Entry #10)
Netflix has released shows over the years that are more than just for our entertainment. I've noticed they all have things to teach us that aren't really talked about. It is incredible to see that they are serious about spreading awareness on specific, yet sensitive topics. There is a Netflix original called "Atypical" which is a show about an 18 year-old boy named Sam Gardner who has ASD- which is also known as autism.
Autism has symptoms that include making little eye contact, having trouble making conversation as well as communicating emotions and difficulties in certain social situations. In the show, Sam makes very little eye contact with anyone he speaks to. He learns how to talk about his feelings more often throughout the show to people who aren't his therapist. Sam overcomes many obstacles which was incredible to see. There are 4 seasons in the show and at the beginning, Sam was limited to many things but then towards the end- he experienced a lot which prepared him for the real world after high school. He successfully gets into college which is a huge challenge to many of us, with or without ASD. Another sign of autism includes "talking at length about a favorite subject". Sam absolutely loves talking wildlife in Antarctica, specifically penguins. He connects everything to that favorite subject of his which is interesting because it allows for the viewers to see his POV on things.
Netflix did an excellent job creating a show to spread awareness for ASD. It shows the viewers what autism looks like and some things to expect. I volunteer with Special Olympics Arizona where I assist people with different disabilities, in doing sports. So, I think it is very important that we spread the word on how to correctly react and assist when it comes to people on the spectrum.
Stay tuned,
