Atypical (Entry #10)

Image
Netflix has released shows over the years that are more than just for our entertainment. I've noticed they all have things to teach us that aren't really talked about. It is incredible to see that they are serious about spreading awareness on specific, yet sensitive topics. There is a Netflix original called "Atypical" which is a show about an 18 year-old boy named Sam Gardner who has ASD- which is also known as autism. Autism has symptoms that include making little eye contact, having trouble making conversation as well as communicating emotions and difficulties in certain social situations. In the show, Sam makes very little eye contact with anyone he speaks to. He learns how to talk about his feelings more often throughout the show to people who aren't his therapist. Sam overcomes many obstacles which was incredible to see. There are 4 seasons in the show and at the beginning, Sam was limited to many things but then towards the end- he experienced a lot which ...

Energy Drink Addiction (Entry #9)

Image
Energy drink consumption has only been increasing over time. What is sleep when you can stay wide awake for hours, all in just a few sips of a can? Young people have developed bad habits in drinking more caffeine than they need to, within an unreasonable amount of time. The effects of these drinks are not only physical, but mental effects as well. However, there are pros to this aside from all the cons.     According to an article from the National Library of Medicine, there are many health concerns that these energy drinks bring. This includes cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, dental, and even neurological effects. The irregular amount of caffeine intake causes for an off heart rhythm, insomnia, anxiety, muscle twitching, and inexhaustibility. The benefits of these drinks do include an elevated mood, increased alertness, and improved memory. A study showed that it also increases aerobic endurance and performance. It helps with attention even in 'par...

Affects A Household Has On Personality (Entry #8)

Image
It's safe to say we all have certain aspects of our personalities that we soon realize weren't made on our own. A lot of what is happening around us- takes affect on the way we think, act, and speak. More specifically, our households play a role in shaping our personalities. Our homes are where we spend most of our lifetime. The people that we live with- under the same roof, have the most power to control how they will take effect on us. For example, I have recognized that many families who lack showing affection, will desperately go and seek for it elsewhere. Those who grew up in a household where it is constant arguing, will grow to become defensive for pretty much everything. They find comfort in arguing with others because that is what seemed right growing up. They also feel the need to be serious in almost every situation. In an article about the Bowen Family Systems Theory for Differentiated Evaluation , it says: "Parents actively shape their children while children...

Fresh (Entry #7)

Image
As we go about our days, there is one major thing we need in order to survive, which is food. Many don't stop and think what it is exactly that they are consuming. It is concerning how many are uneducated or not provided with the facts on the food in which they continue to ingest. Image Source This film " Fresh " made by Anna Sofia Jones discovers and exposes a lot about the food industry. It deserves a lot of recognition. It shines light on terrible truths like animals being fed what they aren't supposed to be fed. This includes feeding them meat when really, they should be eating plants. This creates for diseases such as E-coli and Mad Cow Disease. Not only is it harmful to the animals, but to the consumers as well (humans!). On top of that, the crops are sprayed with chemicals due to bugs and it then affects both animals and people whether they are the ones spraying it or consuming it. That is what I like about the film, it exposes things that we are more than...

Struggles Of Being a College Student Athlete (Entry #6)

Image
This has circled around me for a couple of months now. The struggles of being a college student athlete are real and challenging. From anyone else's point of view, it doesn't sound too bad. Sometimes it isn't but when it does catch up, it tends to impact a lot. There are many pros and cons of being a student athlete, and each side has a great effect on us. Many athletes wake up and go to practice, the important part of this is, are they eating a proper breakfast beforehand? Are they hydrating and getting the right amount of sleep to function well the next day? Are they putting themselves first and taking care of their body after practice? This is an important aspect to being an athlete that needs to be considered. Aside from that, there is the academic part of it. Being a student requires you to have good time management skills and taking responsibility for your work. Inevitably, there will be days where you feel a burnout. Sports makes you so incredibly tired but school ...

Mayhem! (Entry #5)

Image
https://youtu.be/tDT0kGlx52ofeature=shared This Allstate Mayhem commercial aims to connect with todays generation in order to make the ad more "relatable" to grab their attention. They try to promote a safer lifestyle in order to protect the roof over your head. Their goal is to not only "sell" their product, but to also make it so that the audience has a reason to watch it all the way through. They strive to create content that'll keep the people engaged every time they release a new commercial. The advertisement begins with the guy named Mayhem straightening his hair. The room is decorated to be the typical environment of a teenage girl. All the lights are on, there are makeup brushes in front of him, and the colors of the room are soft and bright. Mayhem begins by saying he is a "beauty blogger". In a humorous way, he mocks the teenage girls who at some point have tried being or acted like they were beauty VLOGgers. Although he uses the word blog i...
